Drifting in the city.....
For this drifting project I wanted to show Elephant and Castle in the best light that I know it, so having lived in the area for a year the majority of what I saw was the shopping centre, the market surrounding it and the subways in the area. My view on Elephant and Castle is a lot like the views of others. I find it a very dull area where there is no escape from, the architecture is seriously outdated and consumed with council estates but this is not what I find most unbearable about Elephant and Castle, it is the market and shopping centre itself. For this reason exactly is how I chose which shots to take and of what.
I think it would be appropriate to start with the main and biggest aspects of Elepant and Castle shopping centre... and whats bigger than the statue itself.... Aside from everything i dislike about the centre, this is one thing i do! I find the statue so powerful and a little retro i have to say, it's such a good focal point and i think it should be glamafide more!

I took the below image inside the shopping centre on the top floor and was really impressed that this kind of art was in it. There is a lot going on inside and outside the area but think it lacks a little diversity in many ways, so it was good to see something than can be enjoyed by many cultures

The market area was what i most wanted to explore of Elephant and Castle because having lived there for a year but not really taking much of it into account due to me just discarding of the matter, i thought maybe the drift could be useful to help me get a better view of it

After shooting some compositions my narrow mindedness began to widen because i had the oppourtunity to look at the area in a different light. My perspective on the Shopping Centre as a whole, (including arcitecture, location, activities, stalls) just started to get better, i started picking out the positive points and imagined how they could be improved upon

So after getting my own intake on public space, i've come up with what i feel is the best way to a means of intervening and what better way than my own (little) campaign... i want to invite the locals of the shopping centre to my way of thinking that the shopping centre has so much potential and maybe if they were given the chance they could support a campaign like this and perhaps my intervention will spark something in themselves to do their part or even just take an interest in what the area could become...
